National Council of Canadian Tamils launches Thaanam Food & Toy Drive

For Immediate Release
Monday, January 16, 2012

Over the past week, the National Council of Canadian Tamils has been zealously gathering food supplies and from the Tamil Canadian community to help eradicate hunger across Canada . The NCCT is proud to announce that on January 15, 2012, more than 2,000 pounds of food were donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank, thanks to community members’ generous and heartfelt contributions.

This was the first official activity under the NCCT’s newly-established Thaanam Program, which is geared towards encouraging Tamil Canadian community members to donate food and toys for low income families throughout Canada . The NCCT also has plans to extend its support and donations to communities around the world devastated by natural disaster and other misfortune. Food, supplies, and toy contributions will be accepted year-round, and supplies collected will be distributed to the Daily Bread Food Bank and to other aid organizations.

In 2009, Canada’s Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology issued its report, In from the Margins: A Call To Action on Poverty, Housing and Homelessness, which stated “We believe that eradicating poverty and homelessness is not only the humane and decent priority of a civilized democracy, but absolutely essential to a productive and expanding economy benefitting from the strengths and abilities of all its people.” The NCCT stands united with the Committee and its emphasis on the importance of eradicating poverty in order to create a stronger nation and a better world to live in. The NCCT and its members are dedicated to social progress and to improving the lives of the poor, hungry, and homeless.

The Thaanam Program has no end-date, as it is committed to effecting long-term change in Canada and across the globe. NCCT encourages community members and other organizations to contact the drive’s coordinator, Varathan Somasundaram, with requests for support and donations to other causes. As the NCCT identifies people and communities in need, it plans to orient its efforts accordingly in order to demonstrate how deeply committed its leaders and members are to improving quality of life for the human race.

In 2011 alone, the NCCT organized two very successful blood drives in collaboration with Canadian Blood Services that helped to save thousands of lives. It is important to note that none of these successes could have been possible without the generous contributions of the NCCT’s many donors and supporters who came forward during the blood drives and for its first food drive. The NCCT is truly grateful for the kindness and generosity community members continue to show. Together, the NCCT and Tamil Canadians can make a significant impact and improve the lives of so many men, women, and children in need worldwide.
