Tamil Canadian youth address youth unemployment issue with mayoral candidate John Tory

Tamil Canadian youth stressed the importance of addressing youth unemployment rate with Toronto mayoral candidate John Tory. Youth shared their views at a round table discussion with over 30 youth leaders hosted by John Tory.

"We are happy to hear Mr. Tory is taking the lead on addressing this important issue and we wanted to ensure that challenges faced by Tamil youth in Toronto are heard” said Pranavan Ganesh, a community activist and participant at the round table.

The round table was organized by John Tory to hear about the challenges youth face in finding work in Toronto and outline how his One Toronto Youth Employment plan will help them find jobs.

“We have a youth unemployment rate of 20 per cent in Toronto, which is the highest in Ontario. That’s unacceptable,” said Tory.

One of the biggest concern around youth unemployment identified by the participants was access to employment hubs across the GTA. Addressing the gaps in public transit Tory’s platform will build the SmartTrack line, an all-day, two-way, express surface subway.

Some of the additional initiatives addressed in Tory’s platform addressing youth unemployment include:

    · Double the number of companies participating in Partnership to Advance Youth Employment program in 2015.

    · Coordinate and consolidate Toronto’s youth employment services

    · Act as youth employment ambassador to promote the creation of industry clusters and innovation centres that will help youth partner with new business opportunities.

    · reduce property taxes around the Scarborough subway expansion area for a set time to entice start-ups and companies to move to the area, with a priority on creating opportunities for young people.

“As your Mayor, I will roll up my sleeves and help tackle our city’s growing youth unemployment rate by promoting Toronto as the place to do business,” said Tory. “We have a responsibility to lead and support the next generation of leaders in our great city. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it makes good business sense for Toronto.”

When asked if he has participated in similar discussions with other mayoral candidates, Mr. Ganesh indicated that he is prepared to have the same conversation with other candidates where opportunity exists.
