Toronto's Tamil Canadian community gears up to host new refugees

When Vathany Utayam first heard about the imminent arrival of refugees in a ship off the coast near Victoria, B.C., she knew she was in for long, long days of work. "I didn't realize just how busy it would be," said Utayam, a volunteer with the Canadian Tamil Congress. She has spent between 8 to 14 hours every day this past week answering questions, trying to raise money and making calls to local Tamil families, asking if they can host the refugees when they eventually make their way to Toronto. Migrant Tamil children embrace Canadian schooling

They prefer sliced apples and oranges over oatmeal bars at snack time, can't get enough of singing Itsy Bitsy Spider and don't mind getting homework - some even clamour for it.

Freedom to speak critical

I write to register my appreciation for this column by Martin Regg Cohn. Very few journalists have the courage of their conviction to speak in defence of the right to freedom of expression, something to which the government, both Conservative and Liberal, pay only lip service!

Now, about those ships, Mr. Toews...

There's a global recession and Canada's economy is not immune. Shiploads of strange, foreign refugees - economic migrants and oppressed minorities - have been landing on our shores, fleeing civil war, economic up heaval and famine.

The Canadian Tamils of Sri Lankan origin ("Tamils") are one of the fasterst growing visible minority groups in the Greater Toronto Area. Canada is now home to more than 250, 000 Tamils, of which approximately 200, 000 live in the GTA.

The history of Tamils in Canada goes back to the 1940s, when a few hundred Tamils migrated to Canada. The 1983 communal riots in Sri Lanka precipitated the mass exodus of Tamils, with over 500, 000 finding refuge in countries such as Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, France and Switzerland.

The vast majority of Tamils immigrated to Canada in the last 20 years. Canada is now home to the largest Tamil population outside of Sri Lanka. Within this short period of time, Tamils have established a mounting presence in multiple aspects of Canadian life: business, academic, political and social. The Tamil business community has grown in leaps and bounds, with over 2,000 Tamil-owned businesses in the GTA.
