On 26 June 1986, a large number of Sri Lankan soldiers drove into Sambaltivu, a village in Trincomalee, to carry out a ‘search operation’, in the course of which at least fifteen Tamil civilians were killed.

About 30 properties in the village were also set on fire by the troops who remained in Sambaltivu all day. Many of the inhabitants fled to Jaffna via Mullaitivu.
