Parents of 23 persons who disappeared after they were arrested by the army in villages in the Thenmaradchi Division of the Jaffna Peninsula in July last year, lodged their complaints with the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna town yesterday.

The arrests took place in Thachchanthoppu, Maravanpulavu and Kovilakandy on July 19, 1996.

The parents are members of the Missing Persons Guardian Association (MPGA), which is a body formed by the parents and relatives of those whose whereabouts are not known after arrest by police or the army.

The MPGA has alleged that more than 600 persons disappeared in Jaffna after the Sri Lanka Army took control of the Peninsula in December 1995.

It met Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga over this issue in last month
