The District Secretary, and the Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Kilinochchi District, have made an urgent appeal for rupees five million to construct special wards to arrest an alarming outbreak of cholera in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, said sources in Trincomalee.

W. A. Tissera, Secretary, Provincial Ministry of Health (PMH), in his letter to the Chief Secretary North East Provincial Council (NEPC), has said that special wards are urgently needed and appealed for more funds because the PMH had exhausted the funds appropriate for this requirement.

He said that the first step in arresting cholera was prevention which required special wards. He has said that the special wards could be used to treat Diarrhoea patients later.

The monies are to be utilised for the construction of special wards at the Kilinochchi District Hospital (in Akkarayankulam) Mullaitivu District Hospital (Puthukudiyiruppu), the Mallavi and Mulangavil peripheral units (primary health-care centres) and the Tharmapuram central dispensary, said sources.
