The United Nations rapporteur on violence against women has called on the Sri Lankan government to prosecute soldiers who have been accused of raping and murdering women and girls.

The UN official, Radhika Coomaraswamy - who is herself Sri Lankan - said she wrote to the Sri Lankan government expressing her grave concern over the lack of serious investigation of the allegations.

She said she was also concerned about political violence in the south of the country affecting women in particular.
