Geneva (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is deeply concerned about the consequences in humanitarian terms of the current upsurge in fighting between the Sri Lankan security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the Jaffna peninsula.

The ICRC once again reminds both the Sri Lankan security forces and the LTTE of their obligation to comply with international humanitarian law, which provides for the protection of the civilian population against the effects of hostilities. The ICRC urgently calls upon both parties to ensure that the civilian population and civilian property are protected and respected at all times.
