Tamils in Vanni staged a large demonstration today protesting against the bombing of their homes by the Sri Lankan military. The protest took place at 10 AM.

One section of the demonstration started from Tharmapuram hospital and another started at Chundikulam in Visvamadu (Mullaitivu). They linked up at Tharmapuram Muruganantha hospital, where a meeting was held in a nearby compound. Crowds of students, teachers, businesspeople and the general public attended. People carried effigies of president Chandrika Kumaratunga and general Anuruddha Ratwatte, and later burnt them.

Placards read, "Don't destroy our homes with your bombs", "Don't bomb our homes as target practice" and others appealed to the international community to pressure Sri Lanka to stop indiscriminate bombing raids on Tamils. At the meeting, Kandavalai's Assistant Government Agent, Mathews, and Elilan of the LTTE's political section spoke. Both said the government's bombing of Tamils must be stopped and condemned by the international community.
