Thousands of Tamils Monday joined in a mass rally in Mallavi (Vanni, Tamil Eelam) to protest at Sinhalese government's repression of Tamils.

The protesters assembled at Vannan playgrounds where life-size effigies of Sri Lankan president Chandrika Bandaranayake and deputy defence minister General Ratwatte were set alight by two Tamil Malaria victims who could hardly stand upright. A record crowd of Tamils displaced by Sinhalese army offensives together with Tamils suffering as a result of Sri Lankan government's blockade of food and medicine hurled abuses at the Sinhalese leaders.
