Male Tamil detainees raped - report
At least 1 in 5 male Tamil detainees in Sri Lanka have suffered sexual abuse, including rape, according to The Lancet, the British medical weekly. "We believe that sexual abuse of Tamil men in detention is common in Sri Lanka," a report by the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture published in The Lancet said, adding that the number of victims "is probably higher [than 20%] as some will not have reported it." On the evening of Tuesday 28th December 1999, Sarathambal Saravanbavananthakurukal, of a Hindu Brahmin family, was forcibly dragged from her home, in Pungudutivu, near Jaffna Peninsula, by Sri Lankan Navy soldiers. Ehamparam Dhamayanthi, a young woman of 20 years from Kommanthurai, accused of withholding information about Liberation Tigers and kept in detention for more than 22 months, was found innocent by the Batticaloa High Courts and was released from jail. The Police had filed a case against her under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) when she was arrested by the security forces on the 2nd February 1997, said legal sources in Batticaloa. Twelve year old girl raped
A twelve year old girl, returning from school, was sexually assaulted by a Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldier in Sangathaanai in Chavakachcheri, east of Jaffna, last Friday said sources there. Bodies of two Tamil women found in Jaffna
Bodies of two Tamil women have been found in a decomposed state in Jaffna. Postmortem report reveal that the two women were tortured and raped before being killed by the Sinhala army. SL soldiers kill mentally ill woman who resisted rape
Sri Lankan armed forces last Thursday shot dead a Tamil mental patient after she resisted their attempts to sexually abuse her. The killings took place on 30 April in Nochchikulam (Mannar) after the 36 year old woman accidentally strayed near an army checkpost and then resisted soldiers' attempts to rape her. 6-Year Old Girl Gang-Raped By Jaffna Soldiers
Sinhalese soldiers have gang-raped a six-year old Tamil girl at an army checkpoint in Atchuveli (Jaffna). The rape was so violent that the girl is currently fighting for her life in Jaffna teaching hospital. Six-year old Palanthi was stopped on her way to school by soldiers of the Kathiripai military checkpoint. She was then dragged into the confines of the checkpoint and raped by one soldier after another, leaving her with severe physical injuries. This is the second incident of its kind within a few months. Recently a twelve-year old girl from the same area was raped in a similar manner by Sri Lankan soldiers. Parents of school children in Jaffna have been compelled to chaperone their children to school and back every day to avoid such happenings. [ Full Story ]

Volunteer Teacher Gang-Raped By Soldiers - Jaffna
A 20-year old volunteer teacher, Krishnapillai Santhirakala, was gang-raped by Sinhala soldiers as she walked from her workplace to her home in Karanavai (Vadamaradchy). This is a pattern emerging in army-occupied Tamil areas where local girls are brutally raped in retaliation for refusing marriage offers from members of the armed forces. Commandos Rape Married Woman
Sri Lankan commandos of the Mansoor Tileworks army camp (Batticaloa) have raped and caused grievous injury to a Tamil woman carrying food to her husband. She was on her way to a paddy field where her husband was working when Sri Lankan STF troops intercepted her, raped her at gun-point then beat her viciously about the body. More Rapes - Stf Discipline Breaking Down
Sri Lankan soldiers have violently raped three Tamil women in Batticaloa. At 3am (January 2nd) troops broke into a Tamil house where a mother, daughter and woman relative were sleeping. The rapes took place at gun-point. Neighbours later admitted all three to Valaichenai hospital. The soldiers are members of the STF, the so-called elite force of the Sri Lankan army. Rapes by the STF are said to be occurring on a regular basis in Sri Lankan-occupied areas. Last week, two incidents were reported in Mandoor, fuelling anxieties that military discipline in occupied territory is rapidly breaking down, especially in Batticaloa. Selverajah Theenuka is a 10 year old Tamil Hindu girl, living in Pathmeni, Atchuvely on the Jaffna Peninsula. A 5th grade student, she was on her way to school last Tuesday (12th November 96). At 8.15, she was abducted by Sri Lankan soldiers and taken to the Sri Lankan army's Puttur V.C. camp. There, she was stripped and raped repeatedly by Sinhala soldiers. A long distance coach was hijacked near Vavuniya, while on its way from Colombo to Jaffna, by Sri Lankan security armed forces. The coach was driven to a lonely spot on the Mannar Road, where the women and children were chased into the jungle, and the men were shot at as they attempted to flee.
