Young mother gang-raped and murdered

A young woman was gang-raped and murdered by unidentified gunmen near Kannakai Amman Temple in Punguduthivu, an islet off Jaffna peninsula, Tuesday night, residents said. Her body, covered with Palmyrah leaves, was found yesterday morning, about 100 metres from her house, they added.

Sources said the victim, Sarathambal Saravanbavananthakurukal, was in her house with her child and her brother. Around 8 p.m on Tuesday, the gunmen suddenly entered the house, raped the young mother, after forcibly removing her brother from the house.

Residents said the body was found the following morning, with clothes stuffed in her mouth.

The Jaffna Magistrate, R.T.Vignarajah, went to Pungudutivu to hold the magisterial inquest into this death. The victim's body was brought to the Jaffna teaching hospital, Wednesday evening, for further investigations, court sources said.

Meanwhile, Mr.Jegan, District Organizer of the Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party brought this incident to the notice of the Security Forces Commander in Jaffna and Douglas Devananda, the EPDP leader.

A Sri Lanka Naval detachment is based in Pungudutivu. People of the area suspect some Navy personnel were involved in this crime.


Medical report confirms rape, suffocation

Jaffna's acting Magistrate Mrs S.Ilankovan Saturday stated that a 29 year-old woman Sarathambal of Pungudutivu was raped and murdered, according to the medical report furnished by the Colombo's Judicial Medical Officer.

According to the medical report, there was evidence on the body to show that she had been raped had died due to suffocation caused by stuffing clothes into her mouth.

The Acting Magistrate instructed the Kayts Police to conduct further investigations.


Sarathambal's funeral held

The burial of a young Brahmin woman, Sarathambal took place at the Khanate cemetery, Borella in Colombo today. Sarathamabal,29, was gang-raped and murdered in Punguduthivu in Jaffna, allegedly by Sri Lanka Navy personnel on 28 December 1999.

Her father Chandrasekara Sarma and her three-year old daughter performed the last rites.

The funeral arrangements were made by the EPDP and the Forum for Human Dignity.

Mr.Vasudeva Nanayakara, Member of Parliament and who unsuccessfully contested the last presidential election, Mr.S.Sivadasan, EPDP Parliamentarian,Ms Maheswary Velautham, Attorney-at-Law and the Secretary Of the Forum for Human Dignity and Mr.Nimalka Fernando Of the Movement for Inter Racial, Justice and Equality delivered funeral orations.


Jaffna women condemn Sarathambal rape, murder

A large number of women took part in a public protest Thursday evening, condemning the gang-rape and murder of a young mother, Sarathambal. The meeting, organised by the Women Development Center, was held at Navalar Cultural Hall in Nallur, near Jaffna town.

Ms. Saroja Sivachchandran, Director of the Women Development Center, who presided the meeting said time had come to take concrete steps to stop brutal actions against women by military forces.

Attorney-at-Law Ms Linga Thurairajah said on her return from Bangladesh after attending a conference on women liberation, she had come to know the brutal rape and murder of Sarathamabal.

Mr.S.Paramananthan of the Movement for Justice and Peace and Ms R.Jeyarajah, Principal, Jaffna's Hindu Ladies College also spoke.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs. Saroja Sivachchandran informed the audience that a full report of the proceedings of the meeting would be sent to the Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunge.
