A 49-year old Tamil woman, Thankanayaki, has been raped and murdered in Amparai by Sinhalese police and homeguards. In an exclusive interview to the press, her son said the Sinhalese security forces butchered her private parts after gang-raping her. Such instances of rape and brutality by Sinhalese forces occupying the island's eastern Tamil province are not uncommon. It will be recalled that a Tamil mother of four, Koneswary, was gang-raped raped and killed by Sinhalese police on 18 May. 7 Dead, 17 Fighting For Life - As Mankulam Is Flattened
Sri Lankan artillery fired from Omanthai has killed 7 Tamil civilians and critically injured 17 more in Mankulam's crowded town centre. The artillery shells were launched today from what is a distance of over 18 miles. This attack like all others is an attempt to hurt Tamil civilians and wreak civilian centres. Nedunkerni was in the same way razed to the ground by Sinhala forces recently and it appears the army now has its sights on Mankulam, where the same method - buildings flattened, trees demolished - is being applied. The massive exodus of Tamils from Mankulam in all directions is complete, as the Vanni's civilian population becomes ever-more destitute. Sri Lanka's latest military operation is nowhere near complete and looks like continuing for many more months. The 17 people wounded so far in Mankulam are fighting for their lives without adequate medicines or even pain-killers to numb their pain, due to the long-running (and ongoing) medical embargo on Tamil areas. Below are the details of dead and injured. [ Full Story ]

Both the girls were inmates of the Vavuniya detention centres operated by the Sri Lankan military. Tens of thousands of such Tamil travellers have been detained for months in what are (according to all independent accounts) scandalous and inhumane conditions. Sujitha and Jeysutha had been on their way to Colombo, where their parents live. Soldiers had taken them away from the camp earlier and the girls were only seen again as corpses dumped on the roadside. SL Soldiers Killed 3 Tamils In East
Sri Lankan soldiers shot dead three Tamil civilians todayin reprisal for an LTTE attack on their post at Valaichchenai where a Muslim pro-government militia-man was killed. Though defence ministry officials said the murders of the three civilians - in the Eastern village of Valaichchenai - were the work of the area's Muslim community, eye-witnesses (both Tamil and Muslim) confirm that Sri Lankan troops killed the Tamils after taking to the streets firing indiscriminately. It is not unusual for soldiers to strike at Tamil civilians after suffering military losses. The false account yesterday by the defence ministry was calculated to generate ethnic strife between Muslims and Tamils in the East. Also agent Provocateurs of the Sri Lankan government are operating in the eastern part of the island, to promote internecine clashes amongst the island's non-sinhalese people. [ Full Story ]

Hundreds of Tamils 'Disappear' after detention by Sri Lanka
"Hundreds of people in northeastern Sri Lanka have reportedly 'disappeared' after being detained by Sri Lankan security forces since 21 June 1990. Bodies, some of which have been identified as those of prisoners, have been dumped in several places. In Kalmunai, over 70 people were reportedly detained and then 'disappeared' after the soldiers reclaimed the town from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam... Over 30 bodies were dumped in a burnt out shop in Kalmunai, including the body of 23 year old Chandrikumar, who had been earlier taken by the security forces.. In Vavuniya on the 13th or 14th June, government forces reportedly shot and killed defenceless civilians... about 15 bodies were found on the road... hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes as fighting intensified: in early August there were over 300,000 refugees in Jaffna District alone, and fears of food shortages".
