Lankan fudge on Eelam War IV toll

The Sri Lankan Department of Census and Statistics has said that in the last phase of Eelam War IV, between January and May 2009, only 8,998 persons had died in the Tamil-speaking Northern Province where the battle took place. The Census Department’s casualty figures, put up on its website, are in sharp contrast to the estimates of international human rights groups. The latter have been saying that about 40,000 Tamil civilians may have died in what they call “a war without witnesses”. [ full story ]
