- The Baby brigade of the Buddhist monks
In its recent report on Sri Lanka, the New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW) was engaged in lending credibility to the hired Sri Lankan government mouthpiece, Rohan Gunaratna, by repeating ad nauseam his fabricated charges of recruitment of child soldiers by the Tigers. It is well known that he is a former cop with a menacing reputation in the Sri Lankan Police service and an agent of the intelligencebureau, presently disguised in academia and in this position has placed himself strategically to plant bogus anti-Tamil information in the media. The discerning reader should feel that his books and reports, which lack intellectual rigour, are better placed in the Fiction section of libraries.
HRW is fast acquiring a reputation as a front for US interventionist foreign policy in the area. It has manifested its partiality and cowardice by not reporting on the press-ganging of child monks torn away from their Sinhala Buddhist parents by radical Buddhist sects and the JVP (a government party) in Sri Lanka, to serve as foot soldiers in their attempt to foist Sinhala chauvinism upon the country. Rampant Buddhism and violent and self-seeking political monks have been the bane of Sri Lankan politics. Buddhist religion and Sinhala racist politics are a heady mixture in that country and JVP is exploiting this highly combustible situation that can ultimately consume all of Sri Lanka. The power-crazed President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, encourages her coalition partner to foment trouble on the streets while paying lip service to peace talks to keep gullible donor nations sweetened.
